Hoje, 13 de setembro, a plataforma de artes e letras Filamentos, da Bruma Publications e do Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute da California State University, Fresno, celebra o nascimento de Natália Correia — poeta, ensaísta, dramaturga, ficcionista, intelectual e uma das vozes mais livres e indomáveis da cultura portuguesa contemporânea.
Nascida em São Miguel, nos Açores, a 13 de setembro de 1923, Natália fez da palavra uma forma de insubmissão, da poesia um território de liberdade e da imaginação uma pátria sem fronteiras. Na sua obra, o arquipélago natal nunca deixou de pulsar: como memória, distância, mito, exílio e horizonte. Mas a sua voz, profundamente açoriana, recusou sempre os limites da geografia. Pertence a Portugal, ao mundo lusófono e a todos os que reconhecem na literatura uma força capaz de interrogar o poder, desafiar o conformismo e devolver dignidade ao espírito humano.
No mundo turbulento e ruidoso dos nossos dias, a liberdade — tema central que percorre toda a poesia, o pensamento e a intervenção cívica de Natália Correia — adquire uma urgência renovada. Natália nunca confundiu liberdade com silêncio, prudência ou acomodação. Foi uma mulher frontal, destemida e profundamente consciente da responsabilidade da palavra. Ergueu a voz contra a censura, a injustiça, a mediocridade e todas as formas de opressão, acreditando que a poesia poderia contribuir para a construção de um mundo mais livre, mais justo e mais humano. Num tempo em que tantas vozes procuram sobrepor-se umas às outras, regressar a Natália é recordar que a verdadeira liberdade exige coragem, lucidez e a disposição de falar quando o silêncio se torna cumplicidade.
Ao longo deste dia, Filamentos publicará uma série de textos, poemas, reflexões e testemunhos dedicados à sua vida, à sua obra e ao extraordinário legado de liberdade intelectual que nos deixou. Esta homenagem integra as iniciativas da Cátedra Natália Correia, criada no PBBI–Fresno State para promover o estudo, a divulgação e a permanente redescoberta de uma autora cuja palavra continua intensamente viva.
Celebrar Natália não é apenas recordar a data do seu nascimento. É permitir que a sua voz regresse ao espaço público; é escutar novamente a mulher que se recusou a domesticar o pensamento e que fez da poesia um modo de existir e de resistir. É reconhecer que certas vozes não pertencem somente ao tempo em que viveram: atravessam gerações, inquietam consciências e ajudam-nos a imaginar outros futuros.
Hoje é o Dia da Natália. Um dia para celebrar a poeta, a açoriana, a mulher livre e frontal — e a palavra que continua a incendiar o silêncio e a lutar por um mundo melhor.

Today, September 13, Filamentos, the arts and letters platform of Bruma Publications and the Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute at California State University, Fresno, celebrates the birth of Natália Correia—poet, essayist, playwright, novelist, intellectual, and one of the freest and most indomitable voices in contemporary Portuguese culture.
Born on São Miguel Island in the Azores on September 13, 1923, Natália transformed language into an act of defiance, poetry into a territory of freedom, and imagination into a homeland without borders. Her native archipelago never ceased to resonate throughout her work: as memory, distance, myth, exile, and horizon. Yet her profoundly Azorean voice consistently refused the confines of geography. It belongs to Portugal, to the Portuguese-speaking world, and to all who recognize in literature the power to interrogate authority, challenge conformity, and restore dignity to the human spirit.
In today’s turbulent and noisy world, freedom—the central theme running throughout Natália Correia’s poetry, thought, and civic engagement—has acquired renewed urgency. Natália never confused freedom with silence, caution, or accommodation. She was outspoken, fearless, and profoundly conscious of the responsibility carried by words. She raised her voice against censorship, injustice, mediocrity, and every form of oppression, believing that poetry could help build a freer, fairer, and more humane world. At a time when so many voices struggle merely to overpower one another, returning to Natália reminds us that genuine freedom requires courage, clarity, and a willingness to speak whenever silence becomes complicity.
Throughout the day, Filamentos will publish a series of texts, poems, reflections, and testimonies devoted to her life, her work, and the extraordinary legacy of intellectual freedom she bequeathed to us. This tribute forms part of the initiatives of the Cátedra Natália Correia, established at PBBI–Fresno State to advance the study, dissemination, and continual rediscovery of an author whose words remain intensely alive.
To celebrate Natália is not merely to remember the date of her birth. It is to invite her voice back into the public sphere; to listen once more to the woman who refused to domesticate thought and who made poetry a way of living and resisting. It is to recognize that certain voices do not belong solely to the age in which they lived: they cross generations, unsettle consciences, and help us imagine other futures.
Today is Natália’s Day—a day to celebrate the poet, the Azorean, the free and outspoken woman, and the word that continues to set silence ablaze and struggle for a better world.
