Between mist and memory, a forgotten voice rises again — Alfred Lewis, poet of work, migration, and quiet belonging.
His words, described by Álamo Oliveira as “a watercolor once invisible,” now emerge from the mist into light.

Filamentos, an initiative of Bruma Publications from the Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute at Fresno State, presents this bilingual poetry series — curated by Diniz Borges and RoseAngelina Baptista — as an act of remembrance and rebirth, but also as an invitation to rediscover how poetry can still educate, unite, and transform.

Every poem is a filament — a thread of color across oceans, joining the Azores to California, Portuguese to English, memory to voice.
Through translation, research, and artistic dialogue, this project reclaims Alfred Lewis’s rightful place in the landscapes of Ethnic Studies and Portuguese-language education, inspiring future generations with the luminous humanity of his verse.

And because poetry must breathe in the world of readers, Filamentos now extends this mission with a Sunday column dedicated to the bilingual work of Alfred Lewis — freely available online.
It is both a gesture of justice and of generosity:

—to make Lewis’s pioneering poetry accessible to readers of all levels, rescuing it from the indifference that once shadowed its brilliance;
—to give Portuguese-speaking immigrant communities a renewed incentive to read, discovering in poetic language a daily act of wonder, reflection, and belonging — a form of education, cultural ballast, surprise, and shared beauty;
—to awaken the spark of creation in young readers and writers, so that poetry becomes not a monument of the past, but a living bridge toward the future.

As suas palavras, descritas por Álamo Oliveira como “uma aguarela outrora invisível,” emergem agora da bruma para a luz.

Filamentos, uma iniciativa da Bruma Publications, do Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute da Universidade Estadual da Califórnia, Fresno, apresenta esta série bilingue de poesia — com curadoria de Diniz Borges e RoseAngelina Baptista — como um ato de lembrança e renascimento, mas também como um convite a redescobrir de que modo a poesia continua a educar, unir e transformar.

Cada poema é um filamento — um fio de cor que atravessa oceanos, unindo os Açores à Califórnia, o português ao inglês, a memória à voz.
Através da tradução, da investigação e do diálogo artístico, este projeto devolve a Alfred Lewis o lugar que lhe pertence nos territórios dos Estudos Étnicos e do ensino da língua portuguesa, inspirando novas gerações com a luminosa humanidade da sua poesia.

E porque a poesia deve respirar no mundo dos leitores, Filamentos amplia agora esta missão com uma coluna dominical dedicada à obra bilingue de Alfred Lewis — disponível gratuitamente online.
É um gesto de justiça e de generosidade:

— tornar acessível a poesia pioneira de Lewis a leitores de todos os níveis, resgatando-a da indiferença que, no seu tempo literário, ensombrou o seu brilho;
— oferecer às comunidades imigrantes de língua portuguesa um novo incentivo à leitura, descobrindo na linguagem poética um ato quotidiano de encantamento, reflexão e pertença — uma forma de educação, de lastro cultural, de beleza partilhada e de descoberta interior;
