Azores Literary Festival to Bring 50 Authors and 40,000 Books to Terceira Island

Outono Vivo 2026 celebrates literature, Azorean identity, and the transatlantic diaspora with 17 days of book presentations, cultural discussions, exhibitions, and performances in Praia da Vitória.

The city of Praia da Vitória, on Terceira Island, will host one of the Azores’ major literary celebrations from October 30 through November 15, as Outono Vivo 2026 brings approximately 50 regional and national authors, 100 publishers and imprints, and a book fair featuring 20,000 titles and 40,000 books.

The festival program was unveiled Wednesday, October 21, by Praia da Vitória Mayor Vânia Ferreira at the Auditório do Ramo Grande. Events will take place at the Academia de Juventude e das Artes da Ilha Terceira and the Auditório do Ramo Grande, combining literature, music, theater, historical reflection, and discussions about contemporary society.

The book fair, organized and managed by the Azorean publishing house and bookstore Letras Lavadas, will be a central attraction, providing access to an extensive selection of Portuguese-language literature and publications from the islands and beyond.

Among the participating writers and public figures are Inês Pedrosa, João Tordo, Maria João Avillez, Conceição Calhau, Pedro Chagas Freitas, Miguel Monjardino, Urbano Bettencourt, Adolfo Mesquita Nunes, and Francisco Moita Flores.

Mayor Ferreira described the festival as a celebration of literature, books, and artistic creativity, emphasizing the diversity of authors, presentations, and performances intended to encourage repeated visits throughout its 17-day program.

Vitorino Nemésio at the Heart of the Festival

A major focus of this year’s edition is the literary legacy of <Entity category=”people” value=”Vitorino Nemésio”/>, the distinguished Azorean novelist, poet, and intellectual born in Praia da Vitória. The festival continues the municipality’s commemorations of the 125th anniversary of his birth.

On October 31, the municipality will present Se Bem Me Lembro: Chamava-se Vitorino Nemésio, a biography for younger readers written by Diana Zymbron and illustrated by Luís Cardoso. The same afternoon will feature Cristina Nobre’s study of two decades of correspondence between Nemésio and Afonso Lopes Vieira.

On November 11, writer and scholar Urbano Bettencourt will revisit Nemésio’s Corsário das Ilhas in a lecture examining island memory and identity, marking the 70th anniversary of the book’s publication. The evening will conclude with Onde a Terra se Faz Memória, a concert by the Sociedade Filarmónica das Fontinhas.

An exhibition devoted to Nemésio’s life and literary production, featuring first editions of his books, will remain on display at the Academia de Juventude e das Artes throughout the festival.

The Azorean Diaspora and Transatlantic Literature

The festival will also devote considerable attention to the literary and cultural connections between the Azores and their communities abroad.

On November 4, Diniz Borges will present two books by Aníbal Pires, Islands of Dreams and Longing and Ao Compasso das Brumas.

On November 5, Borges will join José Júlio Rocha for a discussion of the commemorative facsimile edition marking the centenary of Raúl Brandão’s As Ilhas Desconhecidas, a landmark work in the literary representation of the Azorean islands.

November 6 will feature the presentation of Assunção Melo’s Between Silence and Vision, also by Diniz Borges, followed by a special Diaspora Night entitled Cartografias da Saudade: Escrever a Distância, Habitar a Memória (Cartographies of Longing: Writing Distance, Inhabiting Memory).

The discussion will bring together Onésimo Teotónio de Almeida and Diniz Borges, with José Andrade serving as moderator. Organized in partnership with the Regional Directorate for Communities, the event will explore the relationship between migration, writing, cultural memory, and belonging.

The festival’s broader program includes presentations on Azorean history, regional autonomy, literary heritage, democracy, diplomacy, and the changing relationship between technology and society.

Highlights include a November 10 discussion featuring journalist Maria João Avillez and diplomat João Vale de Almeida on democracy, diplomacy, and information in a changing world. On November 14, Adolfo Mesquita Nunes will present Algoritmocracia, addressing questions associated with technology and contemporary governance.

The program will also feature poetry evenings, children’s literature, musical performances, theater, and discussions addressing social issues, including youth disengagement from education and employment.

On November 15, the festival will conclude with presentations devoted to Azorean cultural heritage and a roundtable examining the discovery of the Azores and the first era of globalization, organized in partnership with the mission structure commemorating 600 years since the discovery of the archipelago.

A Celebration of Books and Cultural Exchange

Beyond its extensive literary program, Outono Vivo reinforces Praia da Vitória’s role as a center for cultural exchange within the Azores.

The participation of Letras Lavadas in managing the book fair is particularly significant in a region where publishers and independent bookstores play an important role in sustaining literary production and connecting island writers with wider Portuguese-speaking readerships.

The festival will officially open at 8 p.m. on Friday, October 30, with the inauguration of the Nemésio exhibition and book fair, followed by a musical performance by João da Ilha and Evandro Meneses.

The book fair will remain open daily throughout the festival, with extended hours on weekends.
