From Fajã de Baixo flow peace and pastoral stillness, together with the fragrances of pineapple and fennel drifting across the verdant hillsides. Small birds, singing as they flutter, cross a sky suffused with crimson gold and violet at the threshold of the mountains. White brushstrokes stand outlined against the blue of the heavens. Flowers slip through walls and roadside verges, while the earth is covered in a multicolored sunlight. Even Santa Maria has appeared, seated there upon the sea—a tranquil, crystalline mirror of the sky. Everything converges in harmonious songs of celebration for Natália, the “Enchantress,” greatest among goddesses.
Her name, “Natália,” is a feminine name that exhales sweetness and is intimately associated with Christianity.
It comes from the Latin Natalia, a variation of the word natalis, meaning “birth.” The name Natália carries within it the meanings both of “birth” and of “one born on Christmas Day.” Perhaps therein lies the deeper reason Natália loved the Divine so profoundly.
I see her seated before me upon the radiant, ethereal horizon, proclaiming:
“We all possess a mysterious part of ourselves, and there are those who seek to unravel its mysteries through psychoanalysis. I prefer to give them voice through Poetry.”
Happy birthday, Natália, on your splendidly renewed 103 years! I admire you deeply. 🌹
I recall here the year of her centenary. I sang her “Estrada do Norte,” the poem Marino de Freitas set to music. The emotion was immeasurable.
Sweet Ponta Delgada and the Island of the Archangel paid her heartfelt homage—and so did I, who had the pleasure of knowing her: I, an Azorean woman of Pico, Flores, and Ponta Delgada, who cherishes our History.
I believe that true and authentic souls such as Natália, at the moment of their Departure, proceed directly to the Celestial Palace, where God keeps closest those whom He loves most dearly.
