A Continuing Encounter with the Poetry of Álamo Oliveira
There are poets who write about islands, and there are poets in whose words the islands themselves seem to breathe. Álamo Oliveira belongs to the latter.
ÁLAMO — The Islands Within the Word is an ongoing Filamentos project devoted to bringing the poetry of Álamo Oliveira—one of the most distinctive and enduring voices of Azorean literature—to readers across languages, oceans, and generations.
Poem by poem, the project will reveal a body of work in which the Azores are more than geography: they are memory and exile, sea and solitude, faith and questioning, departure and return, love, belonging, and the persistent human search for home.
Through the original Portuguese and, whenever possible, English translation, Filamentos will allow each poem its own space to breathe, carrying Álamo Oliveira’s voice beyond the shores that helped shape it and toward new readers throughout the Azorean diaspora and the wider literary world.
