As the sun begins its slow descent over the Atlantic on Sunday, July 19, the historic Forte de Santa Catarina in Lajes do Pico will once again serve as a stage where music, landscape, and memory meet. The third concert of the Música no Forte sunset series will transport audiences across the ocean with an evening dedicated to the rich musical traditions of Brazil, brought to life by the acclaimed duo Nani & Pita.
Set against one of the Azores’ most picturesque coastal backdrops, the concert promises an intimate journey through the rhythms and emotions that have long connected Brazil and Portugal. Together since 2016, Nani & Pita have built a distinctive artistic partnership that explores the shared musical heritage of the Lusophone world, weaving together the elegance of Bossa Nova, the vitality of Samba, the virtuosity of Choro, and subtle echoes of Fado with the poetic tradition of Brazilian song.
Their performances are more than concerts—they are conversations across the Atlantic, where melody becomes memory and every note tells a story of migration, longing, and cultural kinship.
Brazilian singer Nani Medeiros, born in Porto Alegre and proudly rooted in her Portuguese ancestry, has dedicated her life to music. Since 2012, her voice has carried her from Brazil to China and throughout Europe, captivating audiences with performances marked by warmth, elegance, and emotional depth.
Joining her is João Pita, an accomplished guitarist, arranger, and music producer whose career has placed him alongside some of the most celebrated names in Brazilian and Lusophone music. Trained at the São Paulo State School of Music and the Escola Portátil de Música in Rio de Janeiro, Pita has performed on international stages with artists including Alcione, Dona Ivone Lara, Tito Paris, Maria João, and Marta Pereira da Costa, bringing extraordinary musical sensitivity and technical mastery to every collaboration.
For the duo, music is not simply performance—it is a voyage, an exchange of emotions, and a celebration of the cultural bridges that unite Portuguese-speaking peoples across continents.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, with free admission, inviting residents and visitors alike to experience an unforgettable evening where the Atlantic breeze, the historic walls of the fort, and the timeless beauty of Brazilian and Portuguese music come together beneath the setting sun.
Música no Forte is a project presented by MiratecArts, in partnership with the Municipality of Lajes do Pico, and has become one of the island’s most cherished summer traditions, transforming the centuries-old fortress into a gathering place where music celebrates both place and people.
In a setting where volcanic stone meets the endless ocean, Nani & Pita promise an evening that will remind audiences that the Atlantic has never been a barrier between Portugal and Brazil—it has always been a bridge, carrying songs, stories, and shared dreams from one shore to another.
