The Colors of Silence / As Cores do Silêncio

AÇORES: PARTO
Alfred Lewis

Pedras negras expelidas
Do ventre do mundo
Para o cimo do mar.

Cobriram sua nudez
Com ervas verdes
Salpicadas de flores.

E os pássaros chegaram.
Depois o Homem
Em gemente caravela,

Com machado e alveão
Para delinear aldeias
E cavar courelas
No nome do Senhor.

AZORES: I DEPART
Tr. by Rose Angelina Baptista

Black stones scattered
From the belly of the earth
To the crest of the sea.

They clothed their nakedness
With green herbs
Speckled with flowers.

And the birds arrived.
Then came Man,
In a groaning caravel,

With axe and plow
To shape villages and till the soil
In the name of the Lord.
