April 2026: Voices of women by Katharine F. Baker

At the dawn of my translating career, I was apprehensive about attending my first Portuguese-oriented conference, A Vez e a Voz da Mulher em Portugal e na Diáspora [The Voice and Choice of Women in Portugal and in the Diaspora], in April 2005. But I chose it partly because it was being held in my hometown of Berkeley on the campus of my alma mater, the University of California — and because I could attend as just an observer. Presenters spoke in their choice of English or Portuguese on a wide range of topics related to the lives of women of Luso ancestry. There was a range of entertainments, including a new play by Azorean Álamo Oliveira, Bocas de Mulheres [The Mouths of Women]. Attendees at the Berkeley conference, starting with host Deolinda Adão, were welcoming, gracious and kind to me; I made new friends, and had a lot of fun.

After such a positive first experience, I have attended and given presentations at A Vez e a Voz da Mulher em Portugal e na Diáspora, A Mulher e Trabalho [Women and Work] and A Voz de Avós [The Voice of Grandparents] conferences in Ponta Delgada, Paris and Toronto.
