In Conversation: José Nuno — Between Matter and Creation

📆 Wednesday, April 1, at 6:00 PM
📍 Carmina – Dimas Simas Lopes Contemporary Art Gallery (Terceira Island, Azores)

On the anniversary of his birth, and as part of the ongoing activation of the Re.Function Project installation by Paulo Ávila Sousa, the Museu de Angra do Heroísmo (MAH) will honor the Santa Maria–born artist José Nuno da Câmara Pereira, born April 1, 1937, with a public conversation dedicated to his life, artistic trajectory, and the enduring impact of his work.

The event will bring together Francisco Pedroso Lima and Pedro Cota, moderated by Jorge A. Paulus Bruno, for a reflective dialogue on the artist’s place within the cultural landscape of the Azores. Framed as both tribute and critical engagement, the conversation aims to revisit José Nuno’s creative legacy while situating it within broader regional and artistic currents.

José Nuno’s work also extended beyond the archipelago into the Portuguese diaspora. Notably, he traveled to California’s Central Valley for an exhibition at the Heritage Room of the Tulare City Historical Museum, presented as part of the Filaments of the Atlantic Heritage symposium—an annual gathering held between 1999 and 2002 that fostered cultural exchange between the Azores and Portuguese-American communities.

The evening will open with a screening of the documentary A Creator in His Islands (2006), directed by Marcus Robbin and produced by the Azorean Institute of Culture, offering an intimate portrait of José Nuno’s artistic universe.

Admission is free, and a bar service will be available.
