On April 23, Zeca Medeiros takes the stage at Porto’s Casa da Música for a special concert marking the spirit of April and the enduring legacy of freedom. Titled “Abril,” the performance commemorates the Revolution of April 25—an historic turning point in Portugal’s democratic journey and a date that holds deep personal and artistic meaning for Medeiros. Throughout his career, he has upheld freedom, democracy, and hope not as abstractions, but as living principles woven into his music and creative vision.
The evening’s repertoire includes songs that engage in dialogue with the great voices of Portugal’s protest tradition, including “O Cantador,” dedicated to José Afonso, the iconic troubadour of liberty. In Medeiros’ hands, homage becomes conversation—between generations, between islands and mainland, between memory and the present moment.
A musician, composer, actor, and filmmaker, Zeca Medeiros has long secured his place in the story of contemporary Portuguese culture. One of the most compelling ambassadors of modern Azorean artistic expression, he brings to his songwriting the imagery of the Atlantic: islands suspended between departure and return, voyages marked by longing, and landscapes shaped by wind and salt. His poetic universes are unmistakably his own—rooted in insularity, yet open to the world.
Medeiros is also the author of the soundtracks for emblematic television series such as Mau Tempo no Canal, Xailes Negros, and Gente Feliz com Lágrimas, works that reveal his gift for uniting word, melody, and narrative into a seamless artistic language. His songbook moves fluidly between singer-songwriter tradition, popular heritage, literary references, and a vigilant reflection on collective history and identity.
For this live performance, Medeiros will revisit defining moments of his career, blending recent compositions with indispensable classics. He will be joined by special guest Filipa Pais (vocals), alongside musicians Jorge A. Silva (piano), Gil Alves (winds and percussion), and Rogério Cardoso Pires (guitar), forming an ensemble that promises both intimacy and resonance.
Tickets for the concert are available through the usual outlets and online.
In April, in the house of music, freedom will once again find its voice.
