The first Monte Brasil – International Festival of Literature and History of Angra do Heroísmo will be officially presented on February 12, 2026, at 5:30 p.m., at the Lar Doce Livro bookstore in Angra do Heroísmo.
According to a press release, the festival is a new cultural initiative aimed at establishing the city as a space for reflection, creativity, and dialogue around literature, history, and local identity.
The presentation session is organized by Dois Caminhos – Association for the Promotion of Arts and Culture, the entity behind the festival, which has invited members of the media to attend this first public moment of the project.
The event will take place at Lar Doce Livro, located on Rua de São João, a venue that will also serve as co-host of the festival.
Several partner institutions will be represented at the presentation, including the Municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, the festival’s main sponsor, and Lar Doce Livro – bookstore, café, and posta-restante. Also in attendance will be Raquel Varela, a researcher at the School of Social Sciences and Humanities of NOVA University Lisbon, who will take part in the first historiographical residency of the Monte Brasil – International Festival of Literature and History.
Raquel Varela specializes in the history of the April 25 Revolution and in the history of 20th-century revolutions more broadly.
The festival is structured around the motto “One Season, One Residency, One Festival,” proposing a phased program throughout the year. The first of these stages, the Residency, will take place in February 2026 and will include eight public events focused on debate surrounding a potential nomination of Terceira’s Carnival as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The initiative is led by Dois Caminhos – Association for the Promotion of Arts and Culture, an organization formed from a core group of friends, clients, staff, and members of Lar Doce Livro. The association is chaired by writer Joel Neto, with Educator Paulo Matos serving as vice president.
The Festival phase, the highlight of the project, is scheduled for December 2026 and will unfold across several venues in the city of Angra do Heroísmo. It will bring together a variety of initiatives and feature authors from Terceira, the Azores, mainland Portugal, and abroad.
Until the full festival takes place, several activities are planned under the “Season” segment, ensuring the project maintains a continuous presence in Angra’s cultural life and establishing Monte Brasil as a new meeting point for literature, history, and community, according to the organizers.
