Saudade – two poems in translation

Saudade

(Mário Quintana)

At dawn, in the hush of solitude,
I saw you—
in the night, in the stars, in the planets,
in the seas, in the blaze of the sun, and in the falling of evening.

I saw you in yesterday, in today, in tomorrow…
But I did not see you in the moment itself.

Such longing

Translated by Diniz Borges

Saudade

(Fernando Pessoa)

I love all that once was,
all that is no longer.
The pain that no longer hurts me,
the old and mistaken faith,
the yesterday pain left behind,
what remained of joy—
only because it was, because it flew,
and today is already another day.

Transalted by Diniz Borges

Today, January 30th ins national Saudade day in Brazil
