Saudade – two poems in translation

Enough Longing( Free tranalation/interpretation of the lyrics from the song “Chega de Saudade,” written by Vinícius de Moraes and Carlos Jobim.

Go now, my sadness—
go and tell her that without her
I cannot be what I am.
Tell her softly, as one speaks in prayer,
that she should come back,
because I can no longer endure
this quiet hurting,
this staying awake with absence.

No more longing.
The truth is simple and unforgiving:
without her there is no peace,
no beauty that holds its shape.
There is only sorrow,
and that low ache that settles in the body,
that refuses to leave,
that stays and stays.

But if she comes back—
if she comes back to me—
what a miracle it would be,
what a beautiful madness
to find her standing there again.
There are fewer fish moving through the sea
than the kisses I would place
on her waiting mouth.

Inside my arms
there would be embraces without number—
millions of them—
held close like this,
pressed together like this,
silent like this,
until even silence gives in.
Embraces and kisses,
touches and tenderness,
with no thought of ending.

Enough of this arrangement
of living far from me.
I don’t want this life anymore—
you living that way,
you living without me.
Let us end this habit of distance.
Let us leave behind this idea
that you could ever live
apart from me.

Saudade

(Fernando Pessoa)

I love all that once was,
all that is no longer.
The pain that no longer hurts me,
the old and mistaken faith,
the yesterday pain left behind,
what remained of joy—
only because it was, because it flew,
and today is already another day.
