On Thursday, January 15, Teatro Micaelense presented the program for its 75th anniversary celebrations, which will take place throughout 2026.
The highlight of these celebrations will be the presentation, on March 31 and April 1, of a brand-new show, conceived and performed by Azorean artists and creatives. With artistic direction by Isabel Albergaria Sousa and Maria João Gouveia, this show combines music, dance, and cinema, and is a celebration of the institution’s past and future.
As part of the Educational Service, and in partnership with Estúdio 13, a show-workshop, “Ponto de Encontro” (Meeting Point), co-created by Sara Lopes and João de Brito, will be presented in a session for families on March 22 and in several sessions for schools throughout the year.
By the end of the year, a book commemorating the 75th anniversary of Teatro Micaelense, coordinated by Isabel Albergaria Sousa, will be published, and “Teatro Micaelense – Um Ano Na Vida” (Teatro Micaelense – A Year in the Life), an audiovisual record by Fernando Resendes, with a soundtrack by Ana Paula Andrade, will be presented.
The photographic exhibition “À Luz Deste Tempo, O Tempo de Outras Luzes” (In the Light of This Time, The Time of Other Lights), organized by photographer Fernando Resendes, is already on display, revisiting significant fragments of the memory of Teatro Micaelense. The exhibition, which is available until April 12, can be visited in the foyer of Teatro Micaelense, from Tuesday to Saturday, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and 30 minutes before the start of the shows (for ticket holders).
Designed by architect Raul Rodrigues de Lima, on the initiative of Francisco Luís Tavares, managing director of the Companhia de Navegação Carregadores Açorianos, and with the support of the São Miguel society of the time, the Teatro Micaelense was inaugurated on March 31, 1951. It served the island of São Miguel for about four decades with a regular program. From the mid-1980s onwards, the decline in revenues that affected movie theaters around the world, coupled with the deterioration of the building, led to its inactivity and subsequent closure.
Renovated by the Regional Government of the Azores, the Micaelense Theater reopened to the public on September 5, 2004, redesigned by architect Manuel Salgado.
Tickets for the shows will be on sale from January 20 at the Michaelense Theater box office and at bol.pt.
