“A Brave Festival on Terceira Island” is the title of a children’s book presented by the Associação Regional de Criadores de Toiros de Tourada à Corda.
The book launch took place at the Biblioteca Pública e Arquivo Regional Luís Silva Ribeiro, in Angra do Heroísmo.
The event was attended by several members of the local bullfighting community, marking “a moment of cultural and educational appreciation,” according to a statement sent to our newspaper.
Set on Ilha Terceira, the book invites readers to embark on an adventure-filled narrative that highlights “values such as courage, friendship, and discovery, while also promoting the island’s natural and cultural heritage.”
Written in accessible and engaging language, the book is aimed at a broad audience, encouraging a love of reading and imagination, according to the statement.
AN INTRODUCTION
The book introduces some of the main terms and concepts associated with tourada à corda, placing them in their historical, social, and cultural context.
The approach, the presentation note explains, “is clearly informative and explanatory, with no doctrinal intent, encouraging curiosity, dialogue, and critical thinking.”
“A Brave Festival on Terceira Island” also seeks to “strengthen the connection between island residents and the Azorean diaspora, valuing the sharing of traditions, memories, and common cultural references, regardless of geographic distance.”
With simple text and appealing illustrations, the book is intended for families and educators, aligning with the commitment of the Association of Tourada à Corda Bull Breeders to the “responsible and contextualized dissemination of Terceira’s taurine culture among new generations.”
The book is now available at the usual points of sale on Terceira Island, as well as through members of the Association’s board and at the headquarters of the Tertúlia Tauromáquica Terceirense.
On Terceira Island, there are more than 200 touradas à corda every year, as well as arena bullfights, mainly associated with the major popular festivals of the cities of Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória.
