“Because Today is Saturday” receives AnimaPIX Award at animation festival on Pico Island

It’s Saturday, and a woman struggles to balance her domestic life with her need to escape. This is the synopsis of “Because Today is Saturday,” the film by Alice Eça Guimarães, winner of AnimaPIX 2025.

“We are celebrating 10 years of AnimaPIX, the festival for the child in all of us, from picture books to animated films,” announces Terry Costa, artistic director of the MiratecArts association, which produces the festival. “In this edition, we will have with us the winners of the AnimaPIX Award from the last 5 years, as well as our jury Abi Feijó and Regina Pessoa, who is the festival’s patron. We will celebrate a decade with the best of Portuguese animated cinema.”

Alice Eça Guimarães has always been drawn to the world of animated images and has worked throughout her professional life in both advertising and animated films. Her films have been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Sophia Award for best Portuguese short film.

The AnimaPIX festival takes place in the first week of December on the island of Pico, Azores, with public programming and programming for various school levels, from December 2 to 5 at the Madalena Auditorium Library. Joining Alice Eça Guimarães is João Gonzalez, with his Oscar-nominated film, as well as Alice Guimarães, Alexandra Ramires, Laura Gonçalves, and Maria Trigo Teixeira, filmmakers who have received the AnimaPIX Award, who will present their works in a special session open to the general public at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 5, in the Madalena Auditorium.
