Joana Gama flies with “Birds and Mushrooms” to the island of Pico

Pianist Joana Gama takes her show to the mountainous island to participate in the Azores Birdwatching Arts Festival.

“Everything is in everything,” said the Greek philosopher Anaxagoras. Therefore, to talk about trees is to talk about people, and to talk about people is to talk about trees. Trees, seemingly silent and immobile beings, establish many relationships, without which they would not live, and without which we could not live. They also help birds and mushrooms and, through them, spread for miles and miles in a way that is difficult to imagine. Regarding this trio—trees, birds, and mushrooms—we can talk about many things… We can talk about friendship, help, food, music, curiosity, the wind, or forgetfulness that bears fruit—literally! By the way: if everything is in everything, where does the toy piano fit in?

Joana Gama is a pianist and researcher with a PhD from the University of

Évora. She has been developing an eclectic career that intersects music with cinema, visual arts, and performing arts. With more than a dozen music albums released, she is the author and performer of a nature-themed trilogy of shows for young children.

In addition to performances for school audiences, the show “Birds and Mushrooms” will have a session open to the entire community, for all ages, on Friday, November 21, at 8:30 p.m., at the Municipal Auditorium of Lajes do Pico. Admission is free.

The aim of the Azores Birdwatching Arts Festival is to promote birdwatching and encourage it through educational, arts-based dynamics. A MiratecArts project with the Municipality of Lajes do Pico, from November 17 to 23, with programming for various school levels and the general public. www.miratecarts.com
