Born from the light that travels farther than the eye can see, Filamentos gathers the arts and letters of the diaspora into a single horizon of meaning.
Support this living bridge of imagination — where Portuguese and English meet, and where the heart remembers it has many shores.
Across oceans and generations, we write, paint, and sing the language of connection.

Filamentos — Arts and Letters in the Azorean Diaspora

Some lights travel farther than the eye can see — quiet radiances that move across the sea, entering through the heart rather than the horizon. Filamentos was born of that light.
In this space, languages become instruments of dialogue, and creation becomes an act of communion. English and Portuguese breathe on this platform, not as rivals but as twin currents of a single oceanic soul. Here, the arts are both mirror and compass —
revealing who we are and where we might yet go.
Every publication of Filamentos is an archipelago of sensibilities: poetry that listens to the wind; essays that map identity; fiction that imagines the unspoken; creative non-fiction that turns memory into music. From the lava paths of Pico to the fog of San Francisco, from Funchal’s luminous hills to New Bedford’s quiet wharves, each piece speaks in the rhythm of belonging and departure — a dialogue of shores.

The Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute (PBBI) created Filamentos as a living gallery of art and intellect — a meeting place for poets and painters, musicians and essayists,
students and scholars who understand that creation is a form of citizenship. Our mission is to keep culture alive through beauty, to let words and sounds weave what politics often unravels. We publish in both English and Portuguese because we believe
that the Atlantic is not a barrier but a metaphor — a vast page where translation becomes kinship.
Each day, Filamentos brings to its readers new works of poetry, short fiction, essays, chronicles, and reflections that cross the invisible bridges between generations and geographies. We write of the arts in the Azores and Madeira, and other latitudes in the Lusophone world and the Diaspora, of exhibitions that reimagine tradition, of concerts that echo ancient songs with modern instruments, of voices that challenge silence and redefine identity.
To support Filamentos is to affirm that art matters — that even in an age of speed and noise, there is still room for language to breathe, for poetry to think, for music to remind us that beauty is a moral force.

Your contribution to the PBBI Crowdfunding Campaign — Expanding Horizons, Connecting Generations, ensures that this delicate architecture of words and sounds continues to flourish. It keeps the lamps of creation burning — in the student who dares to translate their grandmother’s lullaby, in the essayist who unearths forgotten painters of the Atlantic, in the musician who finds in saudade a chord of universality.
Every donation, whether modest or magnificent, is a note in a symphony of belonging.
Each gesture adds a verse to the ongoing poem of our diaspora. Together, we compose a future where the arts remain our deepest and most enduring homeland.
