International Colloquium on Camões in Angra do Heroísmo-Terceira Island

On October 16 and 17, the city of Angra do Heroísmo will host the international colloquium “The World of Camões.”

“In this year when the whole country is celebrating the 500th anniversary of the birth of Luís de Camões, it is imperative to reflect on and study his work in an attempt to understand his world and relate it to ours, and to assess the reasons for its permanence in our culture,” the organization said in a press release.

The initiative is organized by the Center for Humanistic Studies of the University of the Azores (CEHu), in partnership with the Luís da Silva Ribeiro Public Library and Regional Archive.

The event will be attended by Portuguese and foreign university professors and researchers, who will address the richness and complexity of Camões’ work.

“The choice of Angra do Heroísmo as the venue for this meeting underscores that the Azores, and Terceira in particular, are part of Luís de Camões’ itinerary, as he landed here on his return from the East to the Kingdom,” explains the organization.

The colloquium kicks off on the 16th with the conference “Still in the shadow of Camões” at the Palácio dos Capitães-Generais at 6:00 p.m. This will be followed by a visit to the exhibition “A popular classic: Camões in the Azores.”

On Friday, the proceedings will continue at 9:30 a.m. at the Luís da Silva Ribeiro Library, with presentations and debates.

Participation in the colloquium and its activities is open to all interested parties on both days. Activities specifically dedicated to schoolchildren are planned.

The colloquium is supported by the Regional Directorate for Science, Innovation, and Development and the National Commission for the celebrations of the 500th anniversary of Camões’ birth.

The Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute (PBBI) will participate in this Conference with a talk by Fresno State President Saúl Jimenez-Sandoval, a specialist on the poetry of Camões and Diniz Borges, lecturer of Portuguese and director of PBBI, with a talk on Camões and the construction of the Portuguese Diaspora in the US.
