The artist from São Miguel, Andreia Sousa, is a regular contributor to the MiratecArts association and, in recent years, has led the Com(cordas) project at the Cordas World Music Festival.
On this trip to the mountain island, the goal was to breathe new life into one of the stages located at the association’s headquarters in the parish of Candelária.
“In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Cordas Festival, I returned to the island of Pico to repaint the Palco Lux, a boat located in the Costa Gallery of the MiratecArts association,” says Andreia Sousa. “It is a huge privilege to be able to be part of this celebration and return to my second home, a place that inspires me so much, challenges me, and helps me grow as an artist. This time, the main obstacle was the adverse weather conditions, but in a few days it was possible to breathe new life into the stage, creating a work that celebrates art in its multiple expressions. In a more graphic visual style, but maintaining the vibrancy of colors and energy that are characteristic of me, I highlighted the Viola da Terra – the greatest symbol of Azorean culture.”
Andreia Sousa is the author of the most colorful bus stop in Pico, also located in the parish of Candelária, and the largest canvas on display at the Madalena Auditorium Library. With MiratecArts, she has participated in several editions of the Azores Fringe Festival, as well as the Cordas Festival, including live painting in the streets and courtyards of MiratecArts, which she thanks for “allowing her to return to creating and celebrating art in communion with nature.”
The Cordas Festival takes place in the municipality of Madalena do Pico, from October 1 to 11. Visit festivalcordas.com and follow us on social media for daily updates and more surprises.
