In poetry, fiction, dramatic text, and essays, the author’s unpublished writing adds to the message that runs through the literary cycle of the work published during the author’s lifetime: the epiphany of the Total human being, whereby the evocation of peace and human rights—themes that are also recurrent in the unpublished texts—underline the poet’s central concern: to place literature at the service of the salvation(liberation) of humanity. In other words, Natália Correia’s unpublished work endorses what the author published during her lifetime, but not only that: contact with the writer’s collection allows us to confirm who were the theorists that prevailed in her readings and studies—such as Homer, Aeschylus, Euripides, Horace, Ovid, Epicurus, Plato, Confucius, Lao Zi, Schiller, Hegel, Kierkegaard, Unamuno, Jung, Denis de Rougemont, Heidegger, Eliade, Bachelard, Lacan, Sartre, among others – and who contributed greatly to the symbolic universe of the writings.

It is essential to note that, within the vast collection of documents, there are various writings that Natália Correia did not author. However, it makes sense that they are in the collection because they are typescripts that the writer received from other authors. Whenever possible, we have dated the unpublished documents presented throughout this essay.

Natália Correia wrote extensively about Portugal and Portuguese identity: only the publication of her unpublished essays can truly reveal the depth with which she dedicated herself to recovering the Portuguese soul. We also believe that the author’s unpublished poetry deserves to be made known to researchers, students, and readers in general, in an edition that can bridge the subtextual and textual universes of published and unpublished poetry.
