Atlantic Meeting to draw the island

There are 97 artists from 11 different countries. From tomorrow until Sunday, the Atlantic Urban Sketchers Meeting will take place on Terceira.
“We had no doubt that Terceira had everything it takes to attract artists from abroad. However, this event is living proof of this, not only of the island’s attractiveness, but also of the talent and vitality of Terceira’s artists. It is a great joy to organize this meeting,“ says Manuel Martins, president of the Terceira Island Urban Sketchers Association.
The event takes place, says the organizer, ”around the magic of drawing and art.”
The Terceira Island Urban Sketchers Association describes Terceira as “a territory steeped in the history of the Great Navigations, stunning natural landscapes, rich gastronomy, and exceptional architectural heritage, with the city of Angra do Heroísmo, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, standing out.”
All of this will be captured on paper, through the eyes of those who live here, but also those from outside. The artists are arriving on the island from mainland Portugal (35), but also from Spain (15), Madeira (7), São Miguel (1), Belgium (2), the US (1), France (1), Peru (1), Poland (1), and Hungary (1).
Tomorrow, at 6 pm, the welcome session will take place at the Angra do Heroísmo Interpretation Center.

On Friday, there will be drawing sessions in Angra do Heroísmo, which will move to Praia da Vitória the following day.
On Sunday, a commemorative stamp, postmark, and postcard will be launched.
At 1 p.m., the Angra do Heroísmo Town Hall will host the closing session of the meeting.
The UrbanSketchers movement was founded in 2007 by Gabriel Campanario, a Spanish journalist and illustrator based in Seattle.
It has become a global phenomenon, with the motto “Show the world, drawing by drawing,” promoting on-site drawing as a form of artistic and cultural expression.
In an interview published tomorrow by DI, Manuel Martins discusses the 10th anniversary of the UrbanSketchers Ilha Terceira group. “The balance is very positive and, above all, very human. In ten years, we have organized more than 140 meetings, published three books, held exhibitions, collaborated on cultural projects, and brought artists from abroad to the island. In 2023, we hosted the National Urban Sketchers Meeting, which was an important milestone, and now we are taking this step with the Atlantic Meeting,” he points out.
“More than numbers, what makes us proud is the community that has been created: people who have found in drawing a form of expression, socializing, and belonging. We believe that the future lies in continuing to grow, attracting more people to the practice of drawing,” he stresses.
