Photographer João Freitas presents his latest photographic exhibition, entitled “Entre Partidas e Chegadas” (Between Departures and Arrivals), at the Fajã de Cima Parish Council next Tuesday, August 19, at 7:30 p.m. The exhibition will be open until August 29, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
This is the author’s fifty-third exhibition, which he highlights for the particularity of having been created with a smartphone, demonstrating that anyone, even without professional equipment, can create and exhibit photographs.
“I often find incredible photographs that were not taken with expensive cameras or by photographers with impressive résumés full of courses and awards. These are images created by people who knew how to stop in front of a moment and look at it with delicacy. People who are not concerned with complex techniques, but who, with a simple click, reveal the poetry hidden in everyday life. It is as if, for a few seconds, the world entrusted them with a secret and they generously shared it with us in the form of light, color, and emotion,” emphasizes João Freitas, quoted in a press release.
The exhibition is supported by the Fajã de Cima Parish Council and is part of the program for the 2025 Cultural Week and Festivities of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira.
João Manuel da Rocha Freitas was born on September 10, 1962, in Ponta Delgada, in the Azores.
He grew up in the emblematic fishing village of Calheta Pêro de Teive. This environment had a strong influence on his work, which is highly focused on the cultural traditions of the Azorean people.
He has been a professional photojournalist since 1980 and has published dozens of works in regional, national, and international media outlets.
From a very young age, he rubbed shoulders with journalists from the Azores, who had a decisive influence on his choice of photojournalism. He began his career as a photojournalist for the newspaper Açoriano Oriental and was a correspondent for newspapers such as Correio da Manhã, O Baluarte de Santa Maria, and Record.
He has also contributed to several other newspapers, including A Ilha, Atlântico Expresso, Correio do Norte, Correio dos Açores, Diário dos Açores, Jornal dos Açores, Jornal do Desporto, Roncos do Vulcão, and Terra Nostra, as well as magazines such as Açores, Açorianíssima, Azoria, and the sports magazine Plantel, which he owned and edited.
He is the author of 52 photographic exhibitions and 15 books, all on themes related to the Azores. João Freitas currently works as a photographer for the Government of the Azores, continuing to record and promote the cultural and scenic wealth of the region.
