Natural desta freguesia — tantas vezes evocada como freguesia do Rozário — João de Melo afirmou-se como uma das vozes maiores da literatura portuguesa contemporânea. A sua obra, vasta e profundamente humanista, reflete com singular acuidade a condição açoriana, a identidade insular e as memórias do exílio.

Entre os muitos títulos que enriquecem a sua bibliografia, destaca-se Gente Feliz com Lágrimas, romance emblemático da literatura portuguesa contemporânea, traduzido em várias línguas e amplamente distinguido com prémios de prestígio. Ao longo das décadas, foi igualmente agraciado com relevantes distinções nacionais, entre as quais o Prémio Vergílio Ferreira e o grau de Comendador da Ordem do Mérito.

Neste momento de especial significado, a Junta de Freguesia da Achadinha, em nome da sua população e da diáspora, presta sentida homenagem a um dos seus mais ilustres filhos, cuja obra tem elevado o nome dos Açores e de Portugal, e cuja palavra permanecerá como farol para as gerações futuras.

To the writer João de Melo, for his 50 years of literary career (1975–2025)

The Parish Council of Achadinha congratulates, with deep admiration and recognition, the writer João de Melo for his 50 years of a remarkable literary career, which began in 1975.

A native of this parish—so often referred to as the parish of Rozário—João de Melo has established himself as one of the greatest voices in contemporary Portuguese literature. His vast and deeply humanistic work reflects with singular acuity the Azorean condition, the island identity, and the memories of exile.

Among the many titles that enrich his bibliography, Gente Feliz com Lágrimas (Happy People with Tears) stands out as an emblematic novel of contemporary Portuguese literature, translated into several languages and widely distinguished with prestigious awards. Over the decades, he has also been honored with important national distinctions, including the Vergílio Ferreira Prize and the title of Commander of the Order of Merit.

At this particularly significant moment, the Parish Council of Achadinha, on behalf of its population and the diaspora, pays heartfelt tribute to one of its most illustrious sons, whose work has raised the profile of the Azores and Portugal, and whose words will remain a beacon for future generations.
