Lighthouse of the Word – Álamo at 80

This May 2025 marks the 80th birthday of Álamo Oliveira, a seminal figure in Azorean literature whose prolific career spans over six decades. Born in Raminho on Terceira Island in 1945, Oliveira has authored over forty works, including poetry, novels, short stories, plays, and essays, many of which have been translated into English, Spanish, French, and Japanese. His writings deeply explore themes of emigration, identity, and the human condition, often reflecting the unique cultural landscape of the Azores. Notably, his novel Já Não Gosto de Chocolates (I No Longer Like Chocolates) delves into the complexities of Azorean emigration to California in the 1950s, portraying the fragmentation of identity and the challenges of cultural assimilation. Beyond his literary achievements, Oliveira co-founded the Alpendre Theatre Group in Angra do Heroísmo and was honored as the first Portuguese writer-in-residence at the University of California, Berkeley, and a contributor to PBBI at Fresno State. As we celebrate his 80th year, this segment presents his poetry in English translation, inviting readers worldwide to experience his work’s profound beauty and insight.
