
Editora e Livraria Letras Lavadas, in Ponta Delgada, is organizing another edition of the Book Festival from April 21 to 26, marking World Book Day, which is celebrated on April 23.
In addition to the book fair, which offers discounts of up to 50%, this year’s edition includes various cultural, educational, and recreational activities.
On Monday, at 3pm, there will be a talk with journalist and literary critic Isabel Lucas. This talk will be broadcast live on Letras Lavadas’ social networks (Facebook and YouTube), as part of the podcast ‘Há conversa na livraria’. Also on Monday, at 4:30 p.m., the cultural magazine “Ilhéu Magazine” will be presented in a session led by the editorial director and British journalist Kathleen McCaul, with the presence of Alexandre Pascoal and Pedro Arruda.
The first day of the event concludes with the launch of the book “Casa do Tempo” by Lélia Pereira Nunes, a researcher, author, and director of the Cultural Heritage of the State of Santa Catarina in Brazil. The book will be presented by Sidónio Bettencourt and will be attended by Pedro Almeida Maia.
On April 22 and 23, the activities will be aimed at the youngest attendees, featuring ‘Story Time’ and a puppet workshop with some of Ponta Delgada’s ATLs. On Tuesday afternoon, Sandra Sousa Bairos, a cultural mediator from the Carlos Machado Museum’s Education Service, will give a session on the importance of literature for children. At 4 p.m., writer Margarida Rebelo Pinto appears on the podcast ‘Há conversa na livraria’.
On Wednesday, José Ernesto Rezendes leads a study visit to Nova Gráfica, followed by the Graphic Arts exhibition at the Ponta Delgada Public Library, and ending at Letras Lavadas. At 6:30 p.m., there will be a workshop on watercolor bookmarks, led by artist Oana Nedelcu. The workshop costs 25 euros per person and requires registration.
April 24th is dedicated to history and traditions. At 10:30 a.m., a storytelling session will take place featuring the book “Traditional Azorean Tales” by Teófilo Braga, as read by Anabela B. Freitas. Freitas, aimed at members of the Association of Chronic Pain Patients of the Azores, but open to the public. At 3pm, there will be a ‘Poetic Sarau’ with the Palavras Sentidas Group, and at 8pm, there will be a ‘Fado Night’ with Raquel André Machado and Marino de Freitas.
On Saturday, there will be a ‘Story Time’ led by Amélia da Costa Lopes, for children, based on the book ‘O sol da caracolinha’. From 2.30pm, there will be a coffee tasting, followed by a session of the Letras Lavadas Reading Club. The closing ceremony, at 4:00 p.m., will feature the presentation of the book “Descansos” by Susana Amaro Velho, presented by Paula Santos.
