April 18, 2025, will mark the 183rd anniversary of the birth of Antero Tarquínio de Quental.
As the 18th is Good Friday, the Friends of Antero Association (AAA), as unanimously approved at the last general meeting, has decided that this year’s commemorations will follow a different format to those of recent years.
Thus, in addition to the traditional wreath-laying at the Poet’s grave in the S. Joaquim Cemetery in Ponta Delgada, a creative challenge has been launched for the art students of the Antero de Quental Secondary School. The challenge consists of drawing illustrations on the theme “Antero Today” in a maximum size of 100 cm x 100 cm and a minimum size of 42 cm x 59 cm.
The aim is to get young people to reflect on Antero, his work, memories, and social representations, transporting them to the present day and creating an image that is in keeping with the present day and the way young people today visualize Antero.
The competition will run until May 11, 2025, and entries must be submitted to the school’s Executive Board. The awards ceremony will occur in the school library on May 30, 2025.
Prizes will be awarded to the three best entries, with 250 euros going to first place, 200 euros to second place, and 150 euros to third place. In addition to the amounts awarded to the contestants, young winners will be challenged to nominate a social institution to which the AAA will donate the same amount as the prize to encourage a spirit of solidarity and altruism among young people.
The AAA welcomes the commitment, willingness, and availability of the Executive Board of the Antero de Quental Secondary School as a partner in the initiative to commemorate the 183rd anniversary of the birth of the most universal personality among all Azoreans.
