The Lagoa City Council, through the Museum of Lagoa—Azores, is inaugurating Carlos Mota’s exhibition “Neblina do Tempo” next Saturday at 5 p.m. Curated by Hilda Frias, it will be on display at the Santo António convent until May 18, International Museum Day.
In this, the Lagoa City Council promoted the first exhibition of 2025. In addition to the paintings, there was a video artwork by Maria Mattos, Daniel Santos, and Carlos Mota. The opening of this exhibition will coincide with the municipality’s naming of the exhibition room after Numídico Bessone (1913 – 198), thus paying homage to a man from Lagoa who distinguished himself for his work as a sculptor and medalist.
This is the second time that Carlos Mota has exhibited in a room that has hosted several exhibitions by renowned authors since its reopening to the public, reflecting the municipality’s continued commitment in this direction. According to the Mayor of Lagoa, Frederico Sousa, “Holding initiatives like this is a central part of our educational and cultural program, allowing different audiences to have direct contact with various forms of contemporary artistic expression.” In addition, “these exhibitions play an essential role in shaping a community that is more critical and sensitive to the various artistic languages,” said the mayor.
The curator, Hilda Frias – who has a PhD in Art History and has taught and structured courses and educational activities in various Portuguese museums – says that through this exhibition, it is possible to “take a journey through various continents, cultures and eras, with the landscapes and figures imagined by Carlos Mota”, adding that it “invites us to look beyond the visible, to recognize the marks of the eternal that permeate every moment, every face and every piece of land.”
Carlos Mota was born in 1963 in Ponta Delgada and trained in interior architecture at the Centre desArtsDécoratifs (CAD) in Brussels. Between 1994 and 1998, he studied painting with Toma Roata and drawing with Jacques Richard. He currently lives and works in Lisbon. The Azorean artist regularly exhibits in solo and group shows nationally and internationally, and his work is represented in public and private collections. His work is in the collections of the Federal Presidency of Brazil, Palácio do Planalto, Brasília; the Centrum Museum in Baku (Azerbaijan); the Consulate General of Portugal in Salvador da Bahia; and the Camões Institute. He was awarded the MAC 2017 “30 Year Career – Painting” prize by the Movimento Arte Contemporânea Gallery in Lisbon.
