From February 14 to May 31, the Luís da Silva Ribeiro Public Library and Regional Archive will host the exhibition Tourada no Prelo by Pedro Evangelho in the Arte & Debates space.
The expression “in press-no prelo” commonly refers to a work in progress, usually a publication that is edited and disseminated. As an object, the press is mainly used today by graphic artists interested in vernacular printing techniques. In addition to artists, printmaking practices have been attracting the attention of designers and illustrators tired of the bureaucratic hours spent in front of screens.
This exhibition aims to reveal some of the procedural methodologies of the workshop context, illuminating failures and successes in a permanent search for good form. The theme of the prints addresses the issue of affirming an identity from Terceira, in the style of Nemésio in his Festa Redonda. It explores the bull as a symbol and object of worship, constantly present in the imagery of Terceira Island. Tourada no prelo unites the parallels between Terceira’s bullfighting universe and that of engraving: unpredictability, risk, and a democratic vocation, wanting to reach everyone horizontally. It demonstrates the construction of a convinced Azoreanity through the graphic arts.

Biographical note
Pedro Evangelho (Terceira, 2001) has a degree in Communication Design from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto and is currently in the second year of his Master’s Degree in Visual Arts Teaching at the same institution. The designer and illustrator is interested in establishing bridges between digital and vernacular media, finding in the universe of self-publishing, artist’s books, and fanzines a way of approaching visual narratives around Azoreanity and perspectives of insularity. He is the author of the book “Hoje fiz um amigo,” published by Edições Araucária.
