Exhibit on Pico Island, Azores

On January 31st (this Friday), at 9pm, the Museu dos Baleeiros, in Lajes Pico Island, will be opening the exhibition “The Whaling of Santa Catarina Island” by Joel Pacheco. Born in Florianópolis, Brazil, he is an architect/urban planner, photographer, and visual programmer, researching themes such as landscape, ethnography, and popular culture. He is the author of several books, including “A Canoa Baleeira dos Açores e da Ilha de Santa Catarina”, “Arquitetura e Paisagem-Florianópolis e Açores”, “Florianópolis a 10ª Ilha dos Açores”.
Joel Pacheco aims to arouse interest in preserving the cultural identity of the Azores, show the particularities of these vessels, and help raise awareness of this cultural asset. Shipbuilding is in decline in South Brazil and tends to disappear rapidly due to a lack of builders and difficulties in passing on the production technique. According to him, every effort must be made to ensure this tradition is passed on to future generations.
These images undoubtedly convey the influence of the Azorean presence in the city of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil.
The event will start at 9pm, and admission is free.

The exhibition will be open during the Museum’s normal opening hours (from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from April 1 to 10.30 a.m.).
