Marcos Fernandez Trio at Teatro Faialense (Azores)

Marcos Fernandez Trio explores the music of the Latin world, gypsy-jazz, and original compositions by Galician Marcos Fernandez, who has been making his home on the island of Pico for several years. Accompanied by bassist Nuno Mendes and young guitarist Bernardo Alves Macedo, the trio takes the audience through familiar sounds from other eras, sometimes unrecognizable in their arrangements. The musical project debuted this summer at “Música no Forte” in Lajes do Pico crosses the channel for its first concert at Teatro Faialense on December 30 at 9pm. Tickets are now available at the Municipal Market.

Marcos Fernandez graduated from the Conservatorio Superior de Vigo in the 1980s. In the following decade, he obtained a degree in Contemporary Music from the Ateneo Jazz in Madrid, Latin Jazz Orchestration and Arranging from the Instituto Superior de Arte in Cuba, and a Master’s Degree in Gypsy Jazz from the Conservatorio de Amsterdam. His professional career has taken him to stages and studios with Plácido Domingo, Rafael Basurto Lara, César Lópe,z, and Suzanna Lubrano, among others. As a modern music teacher, he led a school studio in Santiago de Compostela, at the Ateneo Jazz in Madrid, and was director of the ESMAT Conservatory in Cape Verde. Since 2019, he has been living on the island of Pico, where he combines his work as a teacher with live concerts.

For this trio project, Marcos is joined on stage by Nuno Mendes, the musician, composer and multi-instrumentalist best known as a bassist who collaborates on various projects, and Bernardo Alves Macedo, the young Picaroto who is part of more musical groups on the island, including the Chamarritas da Silveira Group, the Casa do Povo das Ribeiras Group, and the Amigos das Tradições Group.

MiratecArts, in partnership with the Horta City Council, is offering a concert to close the year that is accessible and interesting to audiences looking for a relaxing evening on a journey through the instrumental world.
