Lajes das Flores (Azores) Museum welcomes Evandro Meneses SOLO9VIOLA

The Municipality of Lajes das Flores presents the next concert of the SOLO9VIOLA project. The musician from Terceira, Evandro Meneses, takes to the Museum of Lajes das Flores stage this Saturday, November 30, at 20:30. The instrumental concert is free.

“It’s a unique work, developed through the MiratecArts association,” explains producer Terry Costa, adding that ”this project is an experience that can only be enjoyed live. This is not a concert for video or television. Audiences have to appreciate, as close as possible, this young composer and virtuoso musician, with the Viola da Terra, as never seen before.”

The concert is presented in three musical movements, representing the present, the past, and the future. Thus, it retains a whiff of tradition while experimenting with new styles of presenting the viola of the two hearts.

“Evandro Meneses plays the viola as if he were making love to the most adorable being,” writes Italian journalist Camilla Rossio in her review published on BlogSicilia. At the same time, Uruguayan producer Alfredo Erhegaray admits it is ”one of the most accomplished solo concerts seen in recent years.”

The Prague Festival director adds that SOLO9VIOLA is “a magical performance on this beautiful and unique instrument. Evandro Meneses is a master of his art and must be seen.”

SOLO9VIOLA received its world premiere at the Madalena Auditorium at the Cordas World Music Festival on the island of Pico. He went on to perform on the islands of Terceira at the Angrense Theatre in Angra do Heroísmo and the Ramo Grande Theatre in Praia da Vitória; in São Miguel at the Igreja do Colégio – Museu Carlos Machado; at the Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Milagres in Corvo; at the Igreja de Santa Bárbara and the Museu Francisco Lacerda in São Jorge; at the Teatro Faialense in Faial and in Porto at the world’s largest music festival and fair, WOMEX. It returned to Pico at the iconic Auditorium of the Whalers’ Museum and in the school program of the Cordas Festival at the Madalena Auditorium. The project has already ventured abroad to the Enrique Iglésias Auditorium in Montevideo, the Teatro Sociedad Unión in San Carlos, Uruguay, Le Stanze in Fiore-Catania, Sicily, Italy, and A Coruña in Spain. He has yet to appear in the Azores on two islands, Santa Maria and Graciossa.

This young Azorean is very talented. We hope our Portuguese-American Associations in California invite him to perform throughout our state. Indeed, PBBI-Fresno would partner with any interested organization.
