For the fourth year running, AvistaVulcão, in partnership with the Friends of the Capelinhos Lighthouse Association and the Capelo Parish Council, is celebrating the anniversary of the Capelinhos Volcano.
The celebration of this, the 67th anniversary of the Capelinhos Volcano, focuses on the living and filmed memories of some of the people who lived and worked at the Capelinhos Lighthouse. It will take place on Saturday, September 28, at 5:30 p.m. on the lighthouse’s deck.

Based on the presence in Faial of award-winning animated film director Pedro Serrazina, who will present his animated short “Os Olhos do Farol” (The Eyes of the Lighthouse)—the story of a girl who lives in a lighthouse, alone with her lighthouse keeper father—we have organized a gathering of stories about the importance of the Capelinhos Lighthouse in the history of the eruption of the Capelinhos Volcano.
On the lighthouse deck, three videos by Gonçalo Tocha, filmed with three people who were, at various times, the Eyes of the Capelinhos Lighthouse, will be shown.
Mrs. Almerinda Machado, a resident of Norte Pequeno who, like the girl in Pedro Serrazina’s film, grew up at the Capelinhos Lighthouse and lived her whole life in lighthouses with her lighthouse keeper father.
Manuel Vargas Tiana saw the birth of this volcano, and every day, he walks around Norte Pequeno with Almerinda, talking about life before and after the eruption. In the weeks before and on the morning of the eruption, António Medeiros, the son of a lighthouse keeper who became a lighthouse keeper, was working at the Capelinhos Lighthouse.

António Medeiros has worked on almost every lighthouse in the Azores. At the age of 93, in the middle of the ruins of the Ribeirinha Lighthouse, he describes in detail the moment that marked him forever.
These testimonies, in the form of a tribute, will conclude with a screening of the film “Os Olhos do Farol” (The Eyes of the Lighthouse), followed by a presentation of the final result of Pedro Serrazina’s creative workshop with the children of the parishes of Capelo and Praia Norte, restoring memories to the new generations.
