Artists and instruments representing nine countries and various regions of Portugal, including Madeira and the Azores, are part of the program for the ninth edition of the Cordas World Music Festival, which will be held from October 1 to 13 in the municipality of Madalena, on the island of Pico, Azores.
The educational program is comprehensive, reaching all school levels with visits to various schools on the mountain island. It also includes a program at the Madalena Auditorium during school hours, encouraging visits to the festival’s epicenter. “It’s always fantastic to take artists to schools,” admits artistic director Terry Costa, ”but the real experience of entering the festival’s largest hall and experiencing a beautiful moment at the Festival Cordas will stay in the mind of a child of any age forever.”
Camille Farge left France and has already made Flores Island her home. He is taking part in the Cordas Festival for the first time, bringing his compositions to children with the ukelele and guitar; Marcos Fernandez is taking the viola dos dois corações to schools on October 2, Viola da Terra Day; Filipe José Silva is offering an intense program with the cavaquinho; and, back at the festival, Evandro Meneses and João da Ilha are preparing to enchant hundreds more children and adults with their work. The documentary “Cordas” is also available for secondary schools.

Programming dedicated to the third cycle and secondary schools encourages schools to sign up to visit the festival on Friday mornings, highlighting a group that includes a young man from the island and a young Azorean who has created his own show to tour the world. On October 4, Marcos Fernandez Trio and on October 11, Evandro Meneses SOLO9VIOLA return to the festival. From October 8 to 10, Nuno Cintrão presents Canto aos Pássaros for the little ones at the Wine Museum.
“We provide unique experiences for all ages,” adds Terry Costa, encouraging schools to sign up for the programs. “There’s diversity, different histories and cultures, and lots of cordophones to delight and educate our people.”
