Film cycle”Culture of Resistance”in Terceira Island-Azores

Starting this month, the Terceira Island’s Cinema Club (Cine-Clube da Ilha Terceira) is promoting the “Culture of Resistance” film series in partnership with the Lar Doce Livro bookstore.
In a press release, the Cine-Clube da Ilha Terceira (CCIT) said that each month, it will show a medium-length film or several short films, which can provoke a debate with the public that frequents Lar Doce Livro. This project will be called “Films in Debate.”
The first cycle, under the motto “Culture of Resistance,” includes five sessions, from September to January, with the screening of documentaries directed by Iara Lee.
Iara Lee “is a Brazilian-born filmmaker of Korean descent, activist, founder and director of the Cultures of Resistance Network, an organization that promotes global solidarity and connects and supports activists, educators, farmers and artists to build a fairer and more peaceful world through creative resistance and non-violent action,” the CCIT said in a statement.
“It is through this organization that, for several years, Iara Lee has been making important films that denounce the serious humanitarian and environmental problems that our planet has been experiencing in recent decades,” she adds.
The cycle kicks off tomorrow, at 8pm, at Lar Doce Livro, with the screening of three short films: “Director Iara Lee testifies to the UN on Gaza FreedomFlotilla” (3’43”), “Gaza FreedomMarch” (10’20”) and “Fishingunderfire” (3’44”).
On the occasion, Jorge Bruno, president of CCIT, will present the project and the documentaries.

“The Cinema of My Life”
On the other hand, this month the CCIT begins the 2nd Season | 2024 of its project “The Cinema of My Life”.
In this project, the CCIT, in addition to the support of the Angra do Heroísmo City Council and the Regional Directorate for Culture, also has collaborated with the Sociedade Filarmónica de Instrução e Recreio dos Artistas, in whose cinema room the films are shown on Sundays from 18h00.
Until December, eight films will be shown: on September 22, “The Teachers‘ Room” by IlkerÇatak (2023); on the 29th, “Grandma” by Matthew J. Saville (2021); and on the 30th, “The Teachers’ Room” by Matthew J. Saville (2021). Saville (2021), on October 6th, “The Sisterhood of the Sauna,” by AnnaHints (2023); on November 3rd, “The Cairo Conspiracy,” by TarikSaleh (2012); on the 17th, “Ahed’s Knee,” by NadavLapid (2021), on December 24, “The Delinquents” by Rodrigo Moreno (2023), on December 1, “Anselm the Sound of Time” by WimWenders (2023), and on December 8, “The Zone of Interest” by Jonathan Glazer (2023).
According to the CCIT, “these films are generally found outside the main commercial cinema circuits in Portugal” and are part of “that group of films known as ‘alternative cinema.’”
