Praia da Vitória reissues work considered fundamental to its identity.

The reissued book “Memorial da Praia” was launched by the municipality of Praia da Vitória on August 11, 1829, the 195th anniversary of the Battle.
According to the presentation, the initiative aims to celebrate the importance of Praia’s identity and local cultural heritage for current and future generations.
The launch occurred in the Praia da Vitória Town Hall’s Noble Hall and was attended by Eduardo Ferraz da Rosa, the editorial coordinator responsible for this edition.
“This is synonymous with celebration, as we celebrate our history, it is equally important to look to the future. We must work to ensure that future generations know and value our history. An example of this is the legacy we intend to leave with the reissue of the book ‘Memorial da Praia da Vitória’”, said Vânia Ferreira, Mayor of Praia da Vitória.

The work has now been expanded and updated with new texts and images, such as the very rare and famous original “Memorial da Muito Notável Vila da Praia da Vitória,” a book organized by Vitorino Nemésio in 1929 at the Coimbra University Press to commemorate the centenary of the victorious liberal battle of August 11.
“Memorial da Praia da Vitória” is a work that goes far beyond its pages. This book is a testimony to our past, a meticulous and passionate compilation of the stories, events, and characters that have shaped our city over time,” said the mayor.
Historian Sérgio Rezendes gave a lecture on “1829 and the Modern Military History of the Azores” on the occasion.

The lecturer discussed the strategic and geographical position of the Azores and Praia da Vitória during 1829, highlighting the city’s surroundings at that time and today. In the following debate, the mayor of Praia da Vitória said that “our strategic position has played an important role throughout history in supporting various world powers, reinforcing our geopolitical position, namely through the Lajes Base.”
