The Galician music group with the greatest international projection makes its debut in the Azores, on the stage of Música no Forte, in Lajes do Pico. Caamaño&Ameixeiras are one of the great revelations of new traditional Galician music, reframing it with more contemporary sounds. The duo’s intimate and in-depth treatment of Galician folk tradition is making them stand out on the international scene. Last May, they were awarded the Folk Music Prize at the Premios Martín Códax da Música Galega.
Galician folk rites are a fascinating universe where reality, magic, and religion converge to give answers, heal, and celebrate life. A world that places community at its center, understood as a network of help to save each other. This imagery linked to the earth and the sacred is the inspiration behind “Quitar o Aire”, the album by Caamaño & Ameixeiras, a duo made up of Sabela Caamaño (chromatic accordion) and Antía Ameixeiras (violin and voice).

“After a journey through the most recent Azorean contemporary music projects, which draw from the traditional Azorean songbook, we close with our international guests,” says MiratecArts artistic director Terry Costa. “This third season has been the most visited by our audiences and the one with the most comments, whether posted on social media, shared in person at the concerts, or through our association, has generated a lot of positive chatter from our public. It’s been an incredible summer, which now comes to a close with an offer of new sounds for our audiences, with this extraordinary duo of Galician musicians.”
The Caamaño&Ameixeiras concert takes place this Sunday, August 11, at 7:30 p.m., at Forte de Santa Catarina, in Lajes do Pico. Admission is free. Música no Forte, a MiratecArts project in partnership with the Municipality of Lajes do Pico, brings its third season to a close with the support of the Regional Directorate for Culture and the INATEL Foundation. The organization urges people to join them on Facebook: musicanoforte, to continue participating in the project online after the six live concerts.
