Two musical projects from Terceira join forces at Música no Forte with “Diz que é Fado” (Say it’s Fado)
The PACTIS choir and the Wave Jazz Ensemble, together in the concert “Diz que é Fado” (Say it’s Fado), present a repertoire of classic Portuguese music focusing on Fado. This is the next concert in the “Music at the Fort” season, which will be held on Sunday, July 14, at sunset, at the Santa Catarina Fort in Lajes do Pico.
It’s not a Jazz concert, it’s not a Fado concert, it’s a work of fusion between the sensibilities of these musicians, instruments and voices. “Diz que é Fado” is a concert born from a fusion of jazz and fado. For its realization, original arrangements of traditional fados were written for the
instruments of the Wave Jazz Ensemble and for the voices of the Pactis Choir, by Antonella Barletta and Miguel Carvalho.
Antonella Barletta, a renowned pianist in the jazz music scene, and Miguel Carvalho, a talented young musician, also recognized as one of the best harmonizers for choirs, recently won 1st prize in the 2022 edition of the 2nd Évora School | Eborae Mvsica Composition Competition with their Missa Brevis. The theme Mãe is presented, an original composed for instruments and voices by Tiago Machado, a musician well known mainly for the theme, “Ó Gente da Minha Terra”, winner of the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.
“Diz que é Fado” was conceived with a broad vision of the plurality of national music, from tradition to modernity. With daring sound proposals, it is a joint work that shows how fado is a musical genre that can be worked with by other styles.
Wave Jazz Ensemble comprises musicians Antero Ávila, Antonella Barletta, Nuno Pinheiro, Paulo Borges, and Rui Melo. The PACTIS choir is represented here by the voices of Ana Sofia Andrade, Inês Mariano, Maité Corada, Teresa Lopes, and Sónia Pereira.
The “Music in the Fort” concerts are free and start at 7:30 pm at the Santa Catarina Fort in Lajes do Pico. They are a MiratecArts project with the Municipality of Lajes do Pico. Summer is at the Fort!
