The twelfth edition of the Azores Fringe International Arts Festival ended last weekend after more than 40 events welcomed 2,000 people across the nine Azores islands.
At the closing event, the festival’s founder, Terry Costa, presented the theme and hashtag for the next edition: #Fringe13Forever or #Fringe13ParaSempre, which will be the festival’s last edition in the already-known format. “Change is good for society and the development of the cultural arts sector,” admits Terry Costa. “Some festival programs can and should continue, while others have to be revised or even eliminated from the list of opportunities.”
One of the programs that quickly reaches every corner of the archipelago is SHORTS@FRINGE, a series of short videos and films proposed to the festival by the producers, directors, or international distributors themselves. The films are divided by theme or language and shown on regional screens. Audiences can chat after the screenings and choose their favorite works. This edition awards the Audience Award Fringe 2024 to 5 different works. The winners are
Ovo, an animation by Stiv Spasojevic about an encounter between a robot and a baby bird that has just hatched, is distributed by Line Up Productions in France.
Also from France, the films most voted for by the audience were Navad Lapid’s fiction La Premiere, Ana Maria Ferri’s Mascarada from Spain, and Silvia Bertocchi’s Film Rosa from Italy.
The documentary Bissau Vila Morena, by Manuel Loureiro, was also chosen by audiences in the Azores.
The Fringe 2024 Audience Award winners receive the “Atlante” symbol in mini plush format, and the director is guaranteed their next film will be included in the program.
The next edition of #Fringe13Forever is already accepting proposals from artists and filmmakers for the festival to be held in May and June 2025.
