The seventh volume of the Complete Works of Vitorino Nemésio, which includes the titles ‘Corsário das Ilhas’ and ‘O Retrato do Semeador,’ is now available for delivery in a joint edition by Companhia das Ilhas and Imprensa Nacional, with literary direction by Luiz Fagundes Duarte.
“In the original edition of ‘Corsário das Ilhas,’ Vitorino Nemésio left us a ‘warning’ in which he made known the context in which the chronicles had been written (that of two trips to the Azores, one of them passing through Madeira), and their formal character: travel narrative and memoirs.
He also claimed to understand them as a written and spoken ‘newspaper,’ based on speeches in the Diário Popular and at the microphone of Emissora Nacional, in which category he also included ‘Ondas Médias’, ‘O Segredo de Preto’, and ‘Outros Caminhos.’
It was only later, when the critical edition of Vitorino Nemésio’s Complete Works was published by the Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda that an effort was made to interpret these texts,
This edition has tried to be as faithful as possible to Nemésio’s choices, only taking advantage of the division into paragraphs that the author said he preferred.
This is the second volume in the Crónica da Obra Completa de Vitorino Nemésio series. With this edition, intended for a broad audience, in which each volume is reviewed and presented by an expert in the field, the Imprensa Nacional and the publisher Companhia das Ilhas make a decisive contribution to the dissemination and knowledge of the work of one of the writers who will go down in the history of 20th-century Portuguese literature.” [Luiz Fagundes Duarte]
