Azores Fringe invades de island of Corvo

The Azores Fringe International Arts Festival invades the smallest island, Corvo. Films, short stories, knitting and woodwork, research, and social and educational interventions are all on the agenda, as well as sightseeing tours for participants who flew to Corvo.

The MiratecArts Knitting Project flew from Pico to Corvo, and some of the participants set foot on the island for the first time. In partnership with Rosa Mariana Mendonça from Artesanato do Corvo, an apprenticeship program saw some of the knitters complete their mini Barreta do Corvo after a beautiful trip to the volcano’s crater, Caldeirão.

Terry Costa, founder of Azores Fringe, led a story hour and David T.P., from Aparas de Madeira and Associação Corvo Vivo, a workshop to celebrate Children’s Day. The Ecomuseum of Corvo, at Casa do Tempo, presented the annual SHORTS@FRINGE short animation film session.

The municipality supported a visit to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia nursing home for conversation and sharing and sightseeing tours to learn about the island’s cultural venues.

Even before saying goodbye to the island, Terry Costa will be visiting all school levels this Monday, June 3, with presentations of books from the extensive illustrated collection published by Néveda Ent., in collaboration with the Vila do Corvo Town Council, which is giving a book to every child on the island. The stories by Terry Costa, “Néveda in the Americas” illustrated by Vera Bettencourt, and “Music, Maestro!” illustrated by Sara and Ivo Baptista, are the highlights of these presentations. “A weekend packed with Fringe shows on the smallest island,” admits Terry Costa. “It’s always a pleasure to come to Corvo, one of the most welcoming islands in the Azores. I love Corvo and its people. And I’m thrilled when they participate in something they don’t know yet. This is Fringe!”

While some artists continue their development projects, the Fringe opens its program in São Jorge next weekend and continues with a weekly program on the island of Pico. To follow all the action, visit azoresfringe.com and the social networks of MiratecArts and the Azores Fringe Festival.
