In Collaboration with Letras Lavadas in Ponta Delgada, Bruma Publications (PBBI-Fresno State) will publish the book Inner Snow, a poetry translation by the Portuguese contemporary poet, who has been awarded many prizes, Alberto Pereira.
The book will be launched in California in March 2024 as part of a week of poetry and culture celebrations to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute (PBBI) and the Portuguese Immigrant Week in California.
According to António Carlos Cortez, writer and literary critic, whose magnificent piece on the poetry of Alberto Pereira is included in this collection, “Only someone extremely secure and, at the same time, humble concerning his poetry could find, in 40 segments, a way to give form to a course which, being recent, is unique, very singular in current Portuguese poetry. Less is more, as they say. Alberto Pereira is also one of those who is on Hilda Hilst’s side precisely because, by bringing together poems from yesterday with others from today and even being able to do something more extensive, he has preferred to be brief, as if the need for explanation had to be curtailed. In essence, Alberto Pereira takes another step to continue to be one of those who, even if isolated, have good company. Since the company of the world that, in its violence, participates in this poetry of literal literariness: “The city is carnivorous,” “the green with torches gone mad,” “It is on the summit/ that the ice forges/ the most audible scars” … with images like these, I reread Alberto Pereira.”

Diniz Borges, director at Bruma and translator, wrote, “Pereira’s poetry resonates with a universal essence that transcends borders and speaks to the shared human condition. His work exemplifies the richness and vitality of contemporary Portuguese poetry, drawing readers into a world where the beauty of language and the depths of human emotion converge in eloquent harmony.”
Bruma Publications believes that this translation will give a glimpse into the fascinating poetry of Alberto Pereira and the magnificent work that contemporary poets are doing throughout Portugal. Bringing these voices to Fresno State Students and to English language readers across the states is of utmost importance to Bruma Publications.
