Azorean Poetry in Translation

Pedro da Silveira is one of the best-known poets of the Azores. At Bruma Publications, PBBI-Fresno State, we are working on a short collection of his poems to be published in English translation during the first quarter of 2024.

Here is one of the poems:

Autumn ( II)

The scent of flowers
in the wind
of the fleeting afternoon.

Absorbed, slow,
I walk between
flowered walls
and old houses.

And the scent of flowers
in the wind that ripples
the fronds of the beech trees,
the taste of the sea
that hangs in the wind,
– fall into my heart
like water in a pond,
plummeting to the bottom
of my landlocked heart.

… Another island, in the distance,
blue and misty.
Vague longing
craving for it:
the sail that demands it.

Pedro da Silveira – translated to English by Diniz Borges
