Bruma Publications (PBBI-Fresno State) and Letras Lavadas (Ponta Delgada, Azores) contine to join hands in publishing works in translation for the Diaspora and those who want to learn more about the Azores, its history, culture, and literary tradition.
Into the Azorean Sea has 103 poets in both languages. One of those poets is Mário Machado Fraião, born in Horta, Faial, Azores. He has published
various poetry books and collaborated with literary supplements in the
islands and mainland Portugal. He died in 2010.
Instituto Açoriano da Cultura, the entity that recently published a collection of his poetry, describes the poet, included in the anthology with two poems: Discreet and Averse to the so-called “literary world”, Mário Machado Fraião (1952-2010) is the author of verses where the transfigured memory of the Azores of his childhood and adolescence appears, in a light-filled register that also tells of losses and the passage of time, as well as the enchantment and music of small places and big cities. A cosmopolitan poetry steeped in the Atlantic, which wanders around cafés, bars, and terraces, sometimes with a glass of gin and tonic, at others with a cup of coffee or a beer. Verses that take us on a journey from Faial to Lisbon, from Alentejo to Galicia, from the USA to other geographies, in the clear, vibrant language that makes this poetry so seductive and beautiful.
