The exhibition “Women of the Land”, by photographer and journalist Rui Caria, will be on display in São Miguel, at the Arquipélago – Centro de Artes Contemporâneas, from September 9th.
The exhibition, promoted by the Association of Amateur Photographers of the Azores, follows the lives of eight women who work on the land and have their own professions.
“This photographic exhibition follows Lisandra, Beatriz, Virgínia, Verónica, Denise, Nélia, Isilda and Urselina, eight Azorean women aged between 21 and 80. Some of them work full time on the land, looking after the animals, others have other professions, but they help the family in this hard daily activity which is one of the main sources of income for many families on Terceira island,” the organization said in a statement.
“This is work that blends in with everyday life. Caring for animals every day of the year defines another paradigm of work; one that is truly daily, that doesn’t allow for vacations or days off,” it adds.

This exhibition is “an ode to all the women” who, every day, choose “the toughest jobs and with them perform the ballet of life,” says the photographer.
This exhibition has already been shown at Carmina Galeria and Porto at the Leica Gallery.
Rui Caria lives on the island of Terceira and collaborates with various national and international press and communication agencies; his photographic work has been recognized by editors from various publications.
A winner and finalist in several worldwide competitions, his photographs and articles have been published in several books and in the national and international press.
